September Fashion Forecast: Throwing Fall Fits

It is officially the season where temperatures hit all four seasons, starting off with the cool fall mornings, summery afternoons of sunshine, breezy autumn evenings, and finally freezing winter-like nights. To prepare, I’ve learned that balance is everything—keep things light, embrace layering, but don’t suffocate yourself in the process. My go-to formula? A maxi slip skirt, a simple base tee, and a cocoon-like wool coat or a crisp trench. Add cozy socks with loafers, a structured bag, and sunglasses that feel like an exclamation point. If I’m feeling playful, I’ll toss on a scarf and let the day unfold like a story only fall could write.

But this season, the story of fall fashion is being told in trenches. This year, trenches go beyond being just a coat—they’re an attitude, a statement piece, a silhouette that reshapes how we move through the unpredictability of fall. They arrive ankle-skimming, cropped, belted, patterned, and reimagined in supple suede or high-shine leather. There’s something cinematic about them—whether it’s a mocha-toned suede trench brushing the pavement or a sharp leather version that demands attention. Trenches aren’t just about keeping warm; they’re about stepping into character.

And what are trenches without their co-stars: brown in all its decadent variations. Chocolate, mocha, caramel, khaki; the season’s richest shades are grounded yet indulgent, like wrapping yourself in a latte for the day. Whether in a suede trench, a leather tote, or a slouchy knit, brown feels less like a neutral and more like the season’s most confident statement.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, aviation jackets are coming in hot, waist-length, leather-heavy, moto-inspired, with exaggerated necklines that practically beg to be buckled tight against the wind. YSL’s faux leather aviator is the one I can’t stop thinking about; cropped yet commanding, it has the power to turn even the simplest slip skirt into a runway moment. High-neck jackets in general, whether funnel trenches or knit-collared bombers, are climbing the ranks as essentials, equal parts chic and practical.

Of course, knitwear is the forever hero of autumn. This year, I’m drawn once again to stripes. Sometimes bold, sometimes subtle, and oversized knits that bring a little extra comfort without tipping into dress territory. I love a sweater that feels a little undone, slouched just enough to suggest ease without losing polish. And if knit sweaters are the heroes, then wool sweater coats are their noble companions, easy, transitional, draping you in warmth without committing to full-on outerwear.

Fur is also making a glamorous re-entrance, whether plush faux trims on collars, exaggerated cuffs, or full-on coats. It’s luxe, a little dramatic, and perfect for those nights when fall feels like winter’s impatient rehearsal.

As for shoes, the empire of the loafer reigns supreme. Suede loafers, in particular, feel like the unsung heroes of fall 2025; chic yet understated, versatile yet grounded. But don’t think Uggs are going anywhere. Their dominance continues, slipping into the season with unapologetic comfort. Prada’s shearling mules are also still commanding attention, proving that cozy can indeed be couture. Mini slippers, loafers, even slipper-like flats, this fall, footwear is about embracing softness while still looking put-together.

So here’s where I land: fall is about stories told in layers, trench over slip skirt, sweater under coat, loafers paired with socks, and colors that move like chapters from morning sun to evening chill. The beauty of this season is in the contradictions, it’s warm and cold, cozy yet bold, timeless but fresh. And isn’t that exactly why we love it?
